چکیده

Under conditions of naturally acquired primary varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection, the first response of the naive host is mediated by the innate immune system through antiviral cytokines and the activation of NK cells [1]. These responses are likely to be important for the initial control of VZV at mucosal sites of inoculation and to trigger the induction and amplification of adaptive, VZV-specific immunity. NK cells can lyse VZV-infected targets [2], and activated NK cells are a major source of interferon (IFN)–g production, which enhances the clonal expansion of antigen-specific T cells. IFN-a inhibits VZV replication in vitro, and treatment with exogenous type I IFN-a reduced the severity of varicella in immunocompromised children with varicella [3]. In addition, VZV replication in skin is associated with extensive production of IFN-a by adjacent uninfected epidermal cells in the SCIDhu model of VZV pathogenesis; blocking this IFN-a response caused a dramatic increase in VZV spread in skin [4]. Innate mechanisms of immune control have the capacity to maintain the host-virus equilibrium, despite the VZV immune evasion strategies that inhibit both class I and class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) mechanisms for antigen presentation to T cells while the virus is being transferred to skin and in early stages of cutaneous infection [4–6]. These strategies

Cellular and humoral immune responses to varicella-zoster virus in immunocompromised patients during and after varicella-zoster infections.

Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses to varicella-zoster (V-Z) virus were assessed in patients during and after V-Z infections. Ongoing V-Z infections was associated with minimal cellular immunity but not necessarily with poor humoral immunity. Recovery from V-Z infection was associated with a vigorous cellular immune response. Cell-mediated immunity to V-Z virus was demonstrable for year...

Incidence, risk factors and prevention of herpes zoster: review article

Herpes zoster (Shingles; Zona) is an acute infectious skin disease that is caused by the reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV). After the initial infection (chickenpox) or vaccination, the virus remains inactive or latent in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG); when decreasing cell mediated immunity (CMI) occurs, the virus is reactivated from a latent phase to a lytic phase and frequently repl...

Varicella Exposure in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a Low Resource Country: Successful Prophylaxis with Intravenous Immunoglobulins

Background: Varicella-zoster infection is a serious and potentially fatal disease, especially among newborns.Several studies have described postnatal varicella zoster exposure among neonates and reported on the efficacy of varicella-zoster immunoglobulins (VZIG) used as post-exposure prophylaxis. Unfortunately, VZIG is not available in Jordan. A limited number of studies have investigated the e...

Seroepidemiology of varicella zoster virus in healthcare workers in Babol, Northern Iran

Background: Varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection is one of the nosocomial infections and healthcare workers (HCWs) are at high risk group who work in the hospital with likelihood of varicella acquisition or transmission. This study evaluated the VZV seroprevalence in this high risk population in Babol, Iran. Methods: Serological testing for VZV using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)...

The Very Rare Concurrency of Herpes Zoster and Varicella in a 4-Year-Old Boy

Varicella is a common and worldwide disease in childhood. It causes primary (chickenpox) and latent infection that may lead to a reactivation disease called zoster (shingles). Zoster or shingles is caused by reactivation of the virus that has been latent in the spinal dorsal ganglion and may occur even in immunocompetent hosts. Although zoster is rare in children, it ma...

Seroprevalence of Antibodies against Varicella Zoster Virus among Women before Marriage in Yazd, Iran

Background and Aims: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection among pregnant women can cause a serious threat to the health of mother and fetus. Varicella is clearly less dangerous for immunized mothers. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of VZV antibody among women before marriage.  Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 women of child-bea...
